[/b] [li] To introduce participants to the quantitative evidence hierarchy and underlying research paradigms in terms of research questions and biases; [/li][li] To introduce participants to evaluation of methodological quality relative to study design, using a range of critical appraisal instruments; [/li][li] To consider integration of hierarchy and quality when making decisions on strength of the body of evidence; [/li][li] To compare the relative merits of different research designs relative to research questions, clinical context and clinical utility; [/li][li] To consider barriers to uptake of evidence (translation of research evidence into practice); [/li][li] To establish individual systematic review questions; [/li][li] To establish systematic review critical appraisal and data extraction framework.[/li][/ul] Participant learning outcomes - the quantitative evidence hierarchy and how the underlying research paradigms contribute to the hierarchy;
- how to evaluate methodological quality of a research article relative to its study design, using an appropriate critical appraisal instrument;
- estimation of the strength of a body of evidence;
- the relative merits of different research designs relative to the research question and its intent, the clinical context of the question and the clinical utility of the findings;
- barriers in clinical and academic contexts to translating research evidence into practice;
- how to set up a research question for a systematic review, and how to decide on the most appropriate critical appraisal and data extraction framework relative to the research question.

Karen Grimmer PhD, MMedSc, BPhty, LMusA, Cert Health Ec is Professor of Allied Health, and Director of the Centre for Allied Health Evidence, Division of Health Sciences, University of South Australia. The research centre is a collaborating centre of the Joanna Briggs Institute, and is part-funded by the Department of Health SA.
Karen is a physiotherapist by primary training. She completed her PhD in epidemiology from the University of Tasmania in 1996, and has worked on a number of large population-based research projects since then, as well as a number of program evaluations and secondary research evidence synthesis.
Karen is recognized internationally for her research into adolescent spinal health, the theory and practice of evidence-based practice, and systems analysis (particularly in evaluating the outcome of planning for discharge). She supervises honours, research masters and PhD students, and enjoys working with young researchers. She recently completed analysis of a longitudinal five year dataset of adolescent spinal health measures, a survey of therapists’ barriers to uptake of research evidence, and a systematic review of discharge planning activities. Papers from these studies are recently published or in print. Karen teaches research methods to postgraduate allied health students in the University of South Australia, Stellenbosch University (South Africa) and the University of Santo Tomas, Manila. Her passion is facilitating the translation of research evidence into allied health clinical practice.
Karen recently stepped down as a member of the Editorial Board of the Australian Journal of Physiotherapy. She is an associate editor for the Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice (http://ijahsp.nova.edu), and is a reviewer for a range of international peer reviewed journals in allied health practice, systems analysis and spinal health. Since 1996 Karen has published over 100 peer reviewed publications and 30 technical reports for industry, and she has attracted over a million dollars in grant funding and consultancies. She is currently supervising a faculty member of UST, Dr Consuelo Suarez, in her PhD enquiry into understanding and reducing pre-adolescent Filipino children's obesity.
