COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Physical therapists, together with therapists from other disciplines such as occupational therapists
and speech pathologists, are presently involved in providing treatment for the developmentally-delayed child.
But in order to provide the best possible care, holistic therapy should be afforded for these children.
This four-part lecture-seminar is intended to provide an introduction to the basic principles utilized by
therapists in treating the developmentally-delayed child.
It shall provide the participant an exposure to the theories and techniques in pediatric handling,
as well as language stimulation, behavior modification techniques and play activity designing
COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the seminar, the participant should be able to:
Language Stimulation
1.define communication, speech, and language.
2.describe common communication disorders in children.
3.describe the roles of a speech pathologist.
4.discuss basic speech and language stimulation
techniques for children with emerging language.
Essentials in Play
1.define play in terms of:
(a) play therapy vs. play activities;
(b) characteristics; and
(c) functions.
2.discuss the development of play.
3.discuss basic principles of play assessment.
4.discuss the effects of disability on play behavior of children with developmental disorders.
5.discuss the constraints in play.
6.discuss the principles of designing play activities in terms of:
(a) elements that promote play; and
(b) characteristics of a good toy
Behavioral Management
1.define appropriate and inappropriate behaviors.
2.define behavior modification
3.describe techniques to:
(a) build new behavior;
(b) increase good behavior; and
(c) decrease undesirable behavior
4.enumerate advantages and disadvantages of each technique
5.enumerate prohibitive procedures in BMT
6.analyze and apply technique in appropriate to a given situation or setting
Introduction to Handling Techniques
1.enumerate the components of normal movement.
2.discuss concepts in therapeutic handling of children with developmental disabilities
3.discuss principles of handling
