TSE graphs:
Graph questions: KNOW what graph you're facing
3 usual graphs in the TSE:
~ Line graph - line pointing upwards is the vertical axis,
line going sideways is the horizontal axis.
- describe the lines; color (e.g. "red line describes the increase in
sales of copper from 1999 to mid 2000..." ),
dotted lines, curved line (may be described as plateuing of a data)
~ Bar graph - line pointing upwards is the vertical axis,
line going sideways is the horizontal axis.
- describe the bars; color, texture (e.g. sanded, shaded, dotted,
lined bar)
~ Pie graph - Divided into sections/sectors (half pie, quarter pie,
one-fourths, etc.).
- describe divisions of the pie as "sectors",
thru color or texture (whether shaded, sanded, dotted, lined, etc.
e.g. "the red sector indicates the population of individuals using sms functions of cellphones,
the blue sector describes the population that utilizes the GPRS capabilities of their cellphones,
the shaded sectors give the overall number of the population who use both functions.." )
KNOW the symbols:
~ Lines - solid or straight line (bold or darkened) ______, crooked
line /\/\/\/\/\/\/, dashed line ------, dotted line **********
~ Areas (usually in Bar/Pie graphs) - shaded area (or bar), unshaded,
dotted, cross-hatch (crisscrossing lines in a bar), etc.
dashed/dotted lines: symbolized MOST OFTEN "projected forecast" of a study in the graph
(e.g. "projected sales for the coming years from year
2004 there on would be 50% more from previous years..." )
Suggested format in answering the graph portion of TSE:
1. Identify what type of graph one is faced with..
2. Recite title of the graph
3. Identify the factors inscribed in the graph
(if pie identify the sectors, if line/bar described the x-axis,
y-axis and their corresponding data content)
4. Described the data displayed on the graph
(e.g. "in the year 2003, smart sms phone users tallied a record high of
1 billion sms sent compared with previous years... it is forecast that
following this trend, over the next 4 years sms sent will jump 50 higher..." )
5. Draw a conclusion based on what the data provided.
One is capable of answering this portion of the exam in 40-60 seconds
but one can't gauge the time when one is answering...
"when one is equipped... one must only practice"
